Hanson's latest 'green' addition to its extensive masonry range is the Oast House Red Multi brick.

It is another example of the company's careful attention to the energy-efficient production of high quality masonry products As the UK's largest brick manufacturer and a founder member of the UK Green Building Council, Hanson is leading the industry with its commitment to sustainable production methods

The Oast House Red Multi is a vibrant, red-body brick with brown flashing and a small percentage of black sand accents to bring variation to its face.

Commenting on the introduction of the new product, Steve Miller, head of Hanson's sustainability department, said, "It is a traditional southern stock brick targeted at high quality housing schemes".

"Although it does have applications right across the building spectrum where first class finish and outstanding appearance are priorities, it is capable of meeting pretty well every design requirement".

"Being what we call a 'soft-mud' brick, it also has inherent sustainability characteristics".

A significant element of the new brick's embodied efficiency is in the 41% recycled content comprising reclaimed colliery shale, which means that its manufacture has helped to reduce an element of waste that might otherwise have gone into landfill and to restore a derelict area.

Many of Hanson's brick types contain what is known as 'alternative raw materials' (ARM) which are recycled from the company's own manufacturing processes, or even those of other companies.
