Hewden, equipment rental provider, is launching an environmental campaign aimed at raising awareness of green issues within the construction industry.

Hewden, the UK's number one equipment rental provider, is launching an environmental campaign aimed at raising awareness of green issues within the construction industry and recognizing those organisations that are doing most to lessen their impact on the environment The campaign, called 'Green Boots' will feature environmental initiatives at national and regional level and include an award scheme for contractors' sites as well as the company's own supplier base

Hewden will also survey contractors to identify the level of environmental awareness and green measures within the construction industry.

"Everybody needs to be a good corporate citizen and we are all becoming increasingly aware of the effects man is having on the environment," says Jeff Schofield, Hewden's Head of Marketing.

"We realise that the construction industry has a key role to play in promoting best practice and seeking ways to reduce and redress its environmental footprint".

"Whether it is by reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions or recycling and reducing waste to landfill, there is a great deal we can all do to help preserve the planet and its resources," he continues.

In addition to the campaign's external communication goals, the campaign also has a key objective to empower Hewden's own staff.

"Our employees, like everyone else, are aware of how far the environment has moved up the global agenda and this campaign will demonstrate the actions their own employer is taking and encourage them to get involved," continues Jeff.

Hewden's environmental campaign roll-out starts in March, with Hewden conducting a survey among contractors.

Hewden recently took another stride in its own quest to become more environmentally aware.

A further 16 of its locations have been certified to the ISO 14001 (International Environmental Management System Standard), meaning a total of 44 Hewden sites have now achieved the accreditation.

To gain this internationally recognised standard, Hewden was required to define its environmental policy and meet a range of environmental objectives.

These included: continual improvement and prevention of pollution; compliance with applicable legal requirements; establishment of a clear set of environmental objectives and continuous communication of these policies to anyone working for or on behalf of the company.

Hewden is planning to achieve certification to this environmental standard for further 16 of its locations during 2007.
