Today's emphasis on the provision of sustainable solutions in all aspects of construction has led to a renewed focus on approaches to water treatment.

Hepworth's EcoCell range provides one highly attractive option, capable of handling both industrial and municipal strength waste water and of serving populations from 60 to 1,000 people The result of a partnership between Hepworth Drainage and Anglian Water Group, EcoCell is an aerated filter packaged treatment plant

It offers a modular alternative to new or existing sewers and traditional sewerage treatment works and brings major benefits in terms of installation times and performance.

Modules, manufactured in high strength polyethylene, can be transported separately and linked together on site.

Cells can be buried, half buried or located at ground level.

The system is markedly more compact than many alternatives.

Interlocking cells can be used in a variety of layouts to suit available plot dimensions and the modular design allows for modification during the construction process.

Capital costs are typically 20 per cent lower than those of conventional processes.

Lids and access hatches cover the cells to protect users from the reactors, while a central cutaway on the lid facilitates odour removal if required.

EcoCell utilises a combination of compact moving and fixed media and final settlement zones to achieve a high standard of treatment.

Treatment zones can be placed in series or parallel to suit local conditions.

Waste water settles in the primary settlement zone then feeds through each of the biological treatment zones.

These are aerated by means of tubular diffusers in the base.

Air is supplied by blowers which can be housed in an optional soundproofed kiosk.

The biologically treated effluent passes into a settlement zone where the effluent and solids are separated by lamella plates.

Desludging of the settlement zone is automated, with the secondary sludge being returned to the primary settlement tanks.

EcoCell achieves treatment standards beyond 30 mg/l suspended solids, 20mg/l Biological Oxygen Demand and less than 2mg/l Ammonia.
