Innovative and creative hub at Salford Quays

Hewlett in the city....contracts signed and work begins at mediacity:uk project, an innovative and creative hub at Salford Quays.

Hewlett Civil Engineering has scooped a GBP7 million contract at the UK's first purpose-built media city.

Developed by a partnership of the Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company, Peel Holdings and Salford City Council, Mediacity:uk is set to rival other such schemes emerging throughout the world.

The 200 acres of space is being primed for an explosion of new media and creative industries and Hewlett have been brought in by Bovis Lend Lease for Peel Holding to understake initial site works including cut and fill works for piling platforms, roads, drainage and services together with Section 278 works and accommodation.

Construction work has only recently started onsite and the first phase of the mediacity:uk development, which includes the BBC buildings, is scheduled for completion by 2011.

The scheme will deliver 1.5bn to the regional economy; employment opportunities for 15,500 people; over 7,000,000 sq ft of new and refurbished floorspace for business ,retail and residential property and space for 1,150 creative and related businesses.

It is forecast to deliver GBP1bn in additional value added to the economy over the next 5 years.
