MAD Furniture finished by Granite Transformations

A Granite Transformations product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jun 29, 2009

MAD Furniture displays a floating table with black lustrous Trend R New Galaxy finish which looks like natural granite, with the practical, hardwearing performance of advanced polymer technology.

The familiar saying 'you don't have to be mad to work here...

might seem to apply particularly to the MAD Agency in Horton near Wimborne in Dorset, especially as it boasts what appears to be a floating boardroom table.

But MAD is simply an acronym of Marketing, Advertising, Design and the handsome 10ft black-topped table is not actually floating, just suspended on virtually-invisible yacht rigging wires, to create a guaranteed talking point.

The MAD boardroom table and an equally eyecatching reception desk are both clad with a diamond polished, luxurious work surface, made from finest quality Italian granite and expertly fitted by Granite Transformations' local showroom in Lymington, Hampshire.

What makes this Trend R New Galaxy agglomerate surface ideal for these design agency applications, is that it is lighter and more manageable than granite slab, so can be installed without extra reinforcement on kitchen worktops, bathroom units, bar counters, even 'floating' tables.

The MAD Agency, which lists such notable marketing clients as the RNLI, Royal Navy and Daisy and Tom, recently relocated from a converted barn to newly-renovated premises, which have been decked out with custom-designed wallpaper, advanced technology and bespoke furniture, including that floating table for 'out of this world' presentations and meetings.

MD Richard Crossman designed the reception unit and table, then prefabricated the aluminium frames himself, using a high-speed water jet machine, before infilling with mdf board.

Granite Transformations normally measure up, then fabricate the sections off-site, prior to fitting worktops at the customer premises; in this instance, however, all the surface finishing was carried out at the Lymington workshop.

Local showroom principal, Rob Douthwaite, also cut the sections himself, using considerable skill to achieve the smooth continuous curves of the reception desk.

The unusually large 3m x 1.2m Trend R slabs minimised the number of joins required, producing long, unbroken surfaces, while virtually seamless bonded edges contributed further to the quality look.

Now suspended on rigging wires, tested to withstand far more weight than the Trend-clad construction, the highly distinctive boardroom table sways gently to the touch.

Meantime, the reception desk worktop, also fully scratch, impact, heat and stain resistant, sits atop a bright red painted base, in front of matched cutout lettering hugely proclaiming 'MAD'.

As they say, you don't have to be mad to work here, but you might as well look it.
