Hidrostal awarded contract to supply pumps to Heathrow Terminal 5

Hidrostal Limited, based in Newbury, Berkshire have been awarded a contract to supply pumps to transfer surface water runoff, which can contain traces of oil, aviation fuel, de-icer fluid, etc, from the runway and car park at the new Terminal facility, to a downstream separator.

Selected by Black and Veatch Consulting, the company responsible for the design and management of the waste water collection and disposal at Terminal 5, Hidrostal will be supplying 3 x 90 kw immersible screw centrifugal pumps combined with the flow matching Hidrostal Prerostal system.

The Hidrostal pumps were chosen primarily because of the deep low shear characteristic of the screw centrifugal impeller which ensures minimal emulsification of oils in the liquor, an essential aid to the downstream separation process.

Also, due to the steep Q-H curve, the pumps can handle a wide range of static heads with a smaller variance in pump output than most other centrifugal pumps, an important consideration with this application as the suction side water levels vary considerably because the deep shaft and pump station output is not to exceed the flow limitations of the separator.

The addition of the Hidrostal Prerotation system (a unique and simple flow matching and skimming system that utilises only static components installed in the sump) will ensure that the sump is kept clean and free from any floating debris.

This part of the project is due for completion in October 2003.

Terminal 5 is expected to be completed in 2007.
