Hidrostal supply storm pumps to Walsgrave hospital

A Hidrostal product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Apr 5, 2007

Three original long shaft pumps were replaced by three Hidrostal FO6Ks immersible pumps on guide rails at the Walsgrave Hospital.

The new University Hospital for Coventry and Warwickshire is a 1,212-bed acute hospital and a clinical sciences teaching facility and combines the existing services of the City Hospital and the Walsgrave Hospital (Derbyshire Royal Infirmary).

It is a being undertaken by the Skanska Innisfree Consortium on behalf of NHS trusts - University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust and Coventry Primary Care Trust.

Skanska is participating as contractor, as service provider and part owner of The Skanska Innisfree consortium.

The hospital is being built on the existing Walsgrave hospital site and is scheduled to be completed and fully operational in the autumn of 2007.

As part of the build it was necessary to refurbish and upgrade the storm water pumping station positioned below the fountain at the entrance to the old hospital.

This was not a straightforward exercise as it was essential that the pumping station continued to operate as it took 50% of all the water runoff from the site.

Midland Slurry was charged by Skanska to manage the project.

They immediately contacted Hidrostal as they had worked together on many similar installations, including the Castle Point Shopping Centre Bournemouth, and so knew from experience that Hidrostal has both the engineering expertise and the proven pumps to meet the requirement.

The three original long shaft pumps were replaced by three Hidrostal FO6Ks immersible pumps on guide rails.

Hidrostal successfully undertook the mechanical and electrical installation of the pumps which included putting in place overpumping to continue the flow of storm water whilst the new pumps were installed.

Said Mr Colin Stevens, Project Manager, Skanska: ''This is the first time I have worked with Hidrostal and I was very impressed with the pro-active way they approached the project.

As with all projects there were a number of surprises.

When the station was drained, prior to installation, it was discovered that the pump chamber was not an off-line installation as we initially anticipated but an online installation.

This meant that a different by-pass pump had to be sourced to directly pump the incoming water during the works.

Hidrostal's understanding of the situation and their rapid response ensured that the pump installation went ahead as scheduled.'.
