One of the blocks to be refurbished by Higgins Construction was made famous on BBC TV as home to Only Fools and Horses comedy characters Del Boy, Rodney and Uncle Albert.

Higgins Construction has won a £14 million contract with Ealing Council, to refurbish six housing blocks each 16 storeys high on the South Acton estate in west London where they've also secured a £1.4 million order for the development of a new community centre.

Work will begin on site for the projects in January 2005.

Higgins is partnering with Ealing Council, as the client, on both projects, whilst residents remain in-situ to 351 homes from when work begins on site in January.

New bathrooms, kitchens, heating systems and security measures like door entry phones are included in the housing refurbishment work.

Dearle and Henderson are the cost consultants working to a PPC2000 contract, with Bailey Garner as architects for the housing and Procter and Mathews for the new community centre.

The South Acton estate is the largest in West London, as home to around 5,000 residents of 2,000 homes.

The first stages of regeneration work began in 2002 with a tower block being demolished and the whole project is expected to take around 15 years.

One of the blocks to be refurbished was made famous on BBC TV as home to Only Fools and Horses comedy characters Del Boy, Rodney and Uncle Albert.
