A Tall Storey
Higgins Construction PLC has won a £2.4 million contract to refurbish a 5-storey block of flats in Rotherhithe for client, London Borough of Southwark by 2005.
Despite a slowdown in the private housing market for major national developers, Higgins Homes PLC increased sales by 19% to £52 million from a portfolio that continues to combine competitive site locations in and around London with opportunities for both the first-time buyers and investors.
Higgins Construction PLC maintained its lead in public sector contracting for the region, with the year's turnover approaching £120 million from projects for clients in education, healthcare and estate regeneration.
"Our growth obviously places the Higgins Group in direct competition with the leading national companies, especially in estate regeneration, " said Group Chairman Richard Higgins.
"We've achieved this by pioneering all the new ways of working through partnering and the Modern Methods of Construction to build with better quality, efficiency and speed." "We promised last year to make both divisions complement each other even better for the region's housing needs, to thereby provide our affordable housing clients with even more opportunities to meet their own targets.
"The results confirm we have kept our promise by bridging the gap between housing tenures." This is Richard Higgins' first year as sole Chairman after father and founder Derek Higgins OBE stood down.
Richard emphasises that he is determined to make the word "affordable" no longer exclusive to either social housing or B-list locations.
Richard added: "We are obviously well located to deliver the variety of housing tenures needed across the region from our housing in London, the M11 corridor and the Thames Gateway.
Clear direction, strong management and a commitment to training and continuous improvement will ensure our expansion has a sound financial basis." Derek Higgins OBE continues as a Director and recently spearheaded major investments back into local communities through two work-training initiatives for the unemployed in partnership with the national CSV Springboard charity.
