Higgins Construction appointed by John Grooms as main contractor for GBP3.7m redevelopment.

Higgins Construction PLC confirms being appointed by pioneering charity John Grooms as main contractor for the GBP3.7m redevelopment of brownfield land on the outskirts of Southend-on-Sea in Essex, to create a complex of 24 hi-tech serviced extra-care flats with their own daycentre John Grooms is a 140-year-old volunteers-based national charity devoted to providing residential care to disabled people with sister organisation, the John Grooms Housing Association - funded by local authorities and health trusts under annual contracts

David Wood Architects developed the design initiated by Norwich-based LSI Architects for the Southend project, based on a concept of two-storeys plus roof-rooms.

The design specification includes hi-tech electronic-assistive services such as access, warden call, furniture ergonomics, ventilation, washing fittings, electric lighting and telephones to adapt for the most severe disabilities.

Higgins begins construction on the compact site in September to complete within 15 months.
