Reducing your fire liability through accreditation
Specifiers and Building Control officers should ensure that installers of fire protection systems have the knowledge, third party accreditation and certified products to meet the new requirement.
Part E (acoustic) and Part B (fire and smoke) of the Building Regulations.
Firestop Speed Spray helps ensure effective building compartmentation despite building or curtain wall movement.
Hilti Firestop Speed Spray CP672 meets the provisions of BS 8414 (2002) for the slab edge gap in a full curtain wall fire application.
The product is applied over a compressed low density mineral wool as a sprayed mastic, and will maintain the seal even during building movement as a result of a fire.
It can be used with walls and floors, providing fire protection to 2 hours with curtain walls and 3 hours with wall assemblies.
It conforms to BS 476, it is UL and FM approved and is water-based without halogens or solvents, and has been 30 year age tested.
Once cured it will also provide an effective water barrier.
In independent accredited fire testing in North America, the Hilti Firestop Speed Spray test sample was cycled 500 times at 30 cpm in accordance with the ASTM regulations.
This test substantiated that the Hilti product can accommodate up to 15% movement of the curtain wall construction in both a non-fire and fire environment.
Time and motion studies conducted by a number of UK curtain wall installers have also shown the system to be up to 4 times faster to install.
New fire regulatory initiatives in 2006 will effectively shift responsibility and liability for ensuring fire safety to specifiers and installers, so the introduction of Firestop Speed Spray by the world's leading fire stop company, Hilti, offers specifiers superior lifetime performance and lower total installed costs.
