University Students Make A Drama Without Crisis

A Hills Electrical and Mechanical product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Oct 31, 2003

Hills Electrical and Mechanical plc and Hills Integrated Systems have completed the £1.3 million installation of electrical services at Manchester University's new School of Music and drama.

The impressive facility, a complete refurbishment and extension of an existing building, includes a 350-seat Concert Hall, Studio Theatre, electro acoustic studio, practice rooms, lecture theatre, library and lecturers' offices.

The state of the art Concert Hall and Studio Theatre will enable the University's student actors and musicians to put on public performances in attractive, modern surroundings.

The contract, awarded to Hills' Manchester Regional Centre by Totty Construction, included installation of all lighting other than specialist stage lighting, an emergency lighting system powered by central batteries, power supplies, fire alarms, voice and data cabling and lightning protection.

Hills also installed the exterior lighting scheme, which incorporated floodlighting, canopy lighting at the front and back of the building, low level lighting and car park bollards.

Hills Integrated Systems was responsible for all fire and security systems in the building.

Integrated Systems has been created to bring in-house specialist installations such as CCTV, intruder alarms, fire alarms and access control that are traditionally sub-contracted out.

This reduces costs for the client, improves co-ordination on-site and ensures the work is performed to the same high standards as Hills' M and E installations.

Begun in February 2002, the project was completed on schedule in time for the official opening in July this year.
