Hills Electrical and Mechanical's Leeds Regional Centre has been named Contractor of the Year by Shepherd Construction's East Division for outstanding performance on the Tranmoor Point development.

Hills Electrical and Mechanical's Leeds Regional Centre has been named Contractor of the Year by Shepherd Construction's East Division for its outstanding performance on the Tranmoor Point development at West Moor Park, to the north of Doncaster.

West Moor Park is a 154 acre greenfield business park situated close to Junction 4 of the M18 motorway, and at 140,000 sq ft Tranmoor Point was one of its largest speculative developments.

The initial project involved the first-fix installation for the high bay warehouse with attached three-storey office block.

The original specification for the open plan office areas, meeting rooms, reception and waiting area involved a combined heating and cooling system using conventional "in ceiling" 4-pipe fan coil cassette units.

Hills saved its client over £50,000 by suggesting a switch from the specified fan coils to a more energy efficient 3-pipe variable refrigerant flow (VRF) heat pump system which qualifies for Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECAs) under the Government's Climate Change Levy scheme.

Designed to installation of encourage energy efficient systems, the ECA scheme enables a business to claim 100% first-year capital allowances on their spending on qualifying plant and machinery.

Hills worked closely with Shepherd on the £350,000 first-fix installation of the speculative development, which is designed for occupation by either a single or up to six multiple tenants.

"With both office and storage space, it is ideal for a distribution type operation," says Hills project manager Stephen White.

"The intention is for us to work with the tenants to complete the fit-out to their specification as they move in." Hills is encouraging more clients and consultants to take advantage of the ECA scheme, which enables them to save money and energy.

"There is a whole world of opportunity out there with this scheme, and we would encourage clients to get us involved at an early stage in the project so we can highlight the potential savings," says Leeds regional centre manager Damian Farr.
