Architects on Princess Alexandra Hospital extension utilised approximately 150m2 of the Luxalon Multiple Panel Façade which features pure copper skin complete with a pre-finished patination.

Incorporated into the design to provide an interesting and original visual feature, architects on the Princess Alexandra Hospital extension project in Harlow have utilised approximately 150m2 of the Luxalon Multiple Panel Façade (MPF) from Hunter Douglas Construction Elements, which features a pure copper skin complete with a pre-finished patination The 300mm wide copper Luxalon MPF panels installed around the hospital building - including factory produced cranked corner panels - act as feature elements on the mainly brick façade

The system's type "U" panel joints ensure a closed, smooth appearance with all fixings concealed, and horizontal end closures with expressed vertical joints.

As a building material, copper is becoming increasingly popular in the UK for façades due to its longevity, weathering characteristics and zero maintenance requirements.

In addition, copper's environmental credentials are excellent given the low embodied energy in production, with a high percentage from recycled sources, and its future recyclability.

The Luxalon MPF system is suitable for all kinds of utility, commercial and industrial buildings, enabling architects to create a modern façade with multiples of panel modules and shapes, all complete with closed joints.

In addition to copper, MPF is available in a variety of skin materials including aluminium and stainless steel and panels can be installed horizontally, vertically or diagonally depending on the desired directional emphasis.

The new £16 million Princess Alexandra Hospital wing, designed by Tangram Architects and built by main contractor Willmott Dixon, will consist of three wards, two in-patient theatres, a same-day admission unit and a pre-assessment unit.

The installation of the Luxalon copper skin MPF was completed by Luxalon Approved Installer WW Roofing and Cladding Contractors of Waddesdon, Aylesbury.
