Portland Street development heralds next generation of Integrated Rainscreen System

The redevelopment of one of Manchester's most prestigious addresses is set to become the first in the UK to benefit from a new addition to the integrated Luxalon honeycomb cored rainscreen system, developed by Hunter Douglas Construction Elements One Portland Street is a GBP5m redevelopment project of office premises by Bruntswood in Manchester's City Centre

Situated close to the city's famous Piccadilly Gardens, it is the first in the UK to incorporate Luxalon's newly launched QuadroCladn Recessed Window System into the development.

The narrow lines created by the Integrated Window System's perimeter extrusion have been used to create a striking visual impact upon both the building and the surrounding area, without the need for bulky flashing abutment details.

Famous for offering extremely flat panel finishes, Luxalon products have gained a solid reputation amongst both constructors and architects for providing a crisp, sharp and consistent finish to buildings.

Available in many varieties of finishes and coatings, the new range of honeycomb rainscreen panels and integrated recessed windows can be incorporated into almost any type of development, allowing both contractors and architects to create a universal look and feel across the whole of a development.

The unique extruded aluminium perimeter to the Integrated Window System reduces the need for support structure to the adjacent QuadroClad Rainscreen panels, and compliments the use of a honeycomb structure behind each panel, to offer strength and longevity.

The new Luxalon system has been used on the rear of the building, which overlooks a private courtyard Commenting on the new system, Andrew Lee, General Manager, Hunter Douglas Construction Elements said: "The inclusion of recessed windows into the QuadroCladn range of Luxalon Rainscreen products is a significant step forward in terms of the evolution of the product as it offers architects and contractors greater flexibility".

"We pride ourselves in the high standards offered by our range, and through this latest addition by incorporating a 'support hook' into the Integrated Window System's extruded aluminium perimeter detail, we can support the adjacent Rainscreen panel's without the need for any panel support structure - totally unique! I am delighted with the end result and confident that Portland Street will become the first of many to benefit from the new system".

David Brazier, Associate Architect, Pozzoni Group said: "We chose Luxalon because of the high level of finish that it offered the development".

"One Portland Street is a landmark building and we wanted to ensure that the building benefited from a striking finishing touch, which it has certainly achieved".

"Luxalon has been synonymous with providing a high quality finish for many years and the latest development to the existing product range is a significant step forward, in terms of the enhanced flexibility it can offer during the design process".

The site of One Portland Street is perhaps best known as being the site of the Queens Hotel, which served Manchester's wealthy businessmen and sports stars for over 120 years.

The original building was demolished in 1974 to make way for a new development.

The latest phase in the history of the area is part of a project to improve the facilities within the city-centre and has been designed to complement the ongoing regeneration work being undertaken at the neighbouring Piccadilly Gardens.
