Hunter Douglas Construction Elements, one of the UK's leading provider of facade panelling systems has successfully completed a special link bridge for the largest Tesco Superstore in Europe.

The provision of the bridge was a significant factor in granting planning permission for the new store, which is situated close to the town-centre of Slough.

Spanning the busy A4 dual carriageway, it provides pedestrian access between the new superstore and the town's main shopping centre.

Creating the link between the store and the town centre proved to be a significant engineering feat.

Featuring over 400m2 of Luxalon Sandwich Wall, the bridge was constructed off-site and manoeuvred into place using specialist lifting equipment.

Designed by Arups and installed by Eiffel UK, Luxalon was chosen for the project in order to create a striking aesthetic finish to the project.

Famous for offering extremely flat panel finishes, the link bridge is the first of its kind to be completed by Hunter Douglas.

In recent years Luxalon has established itself as the preferred choice of curtain wall panelling systems amongst both specifiers and architects for providing a crisp, sharp and consistent finish to buildings.

Through the unique way in which the system is constructed, gaps between panels can be eliminated, creating a solid, consistent finish across any type of development.

A special consideration for the link bridge proved to be the inclusion of glass.

Traditionally this is installed when a project is in situ, however, in the case of the Tesco Link Bridge, it was also built into the bridge off-site.

Commenting on the system, Andrew Lee, General Manager, Hunter Douglas Construction Elements said: "The project at Slough was highly unusual.

Not only was the bridge constructed offsite, but the irregular shape and design meant that panels needed to be specifically designed to provide a complete finish to the development.

Building the bridge was a tremendous engineering feat and the end results have been extremely successful, combining both a practical link between the store, as well as creating a striking feature on the approach road to the city.

"The precise measurements and design of the bridge meant that the panels required an extremely high degree of accuracy.

This is a project of its kind that has been completed by Luxalon and demonstrates the tremendous degree of flexibility that can feature across the Luxalon range.

I am delighted with the end result and believe that the bridge will become a well-known local landmark in years to come.".
