MCRMA, NFRC And Hodgson Offer Sealing Guidance
During the last two years Hodgson Sealants have been involved in a number of technical projects as members of the MCRMA and NFRC, aimed at improving the selection and application of strip sealants.
Technical Director, Roger Dickinson, says: "Energy efficiency was a fundamental design element of this project.
78 162W PV panels were mounted on a south facing slope of the roof, on aluminium rails with stainless steel brackets.
"The roof construction is a twinskin insulated construction, and the outer roof panels had to be pierced so that the mounting rails could be fastened to the purlins.
To ensure the roof remained weathertight over the lifetime of the building, Kingspan - the roof panel manufacturer - recommended Hodgsons butyl sealant.
"The Hodgson 0311 butyl rubber sealant tape was easy to apply to the stainless steel brackets and it provided instant tack for the brackets to the sloping roof.
This allowed two handed driving of the fastener, making installation simple and rapid, as well as providing a long lasting, weather and airtight seal.
"In addition, we have used the Hodgsons butyl tape to seal the polypipe pipe sealing flange to the roof, and maintain a weather-tight seal." The peak power of the solar array is 12.632 kW, and design calculations predict the system to produce around 9400kWh per year, saving 5.3 tonnes of CO2 (based on the figures for grid displaced electricity from the Building Regulations Part L2A).
The project secured a 50% grant towards its cost from Phase 2 of the Low Carbon Buildings Programme, through Energi working with British Gas as the LCBP framework supplier.
A large format public display screen in the school foyer will show the current power production, total power to date, CO2 saved to date, GBPs saved to date and other figures.
This will provide a valuable part of the children's education in sustainability.
