H and R Johnson tilers worked alongside the specialist shopfitters Railston on Material Lab, the surface design resource centre.

Material Lab, the surface design resource centre, has won a Retailer Interior Award thanks to shopfitters Railston, after being shortlisted for the Shopfitting Excellence category Located in central London, the 409 square metre facility is situated on two floors and provides specifiers with a unique opportunity to research surface decoration materials for use in all types of buildings

Bringing technology and creativity together, the stimulating environment that has been created within Material Lab also features glass, wood, metal and other surface decoration materials as well as the H and R Johnson portfolio of ceramic wall and floor tiles.

Visitors are able to choose the materials they wish to specify, and take samples of their chosen products with them.

In addition, Material Lab includes computer facilities for people to utilise, making it an extension of their own offices.

The design for Material Lab presented Railston with a challenging project to fit out this state of the art facility.

Features, including running water and an open flame, required specialist installation techniques to ensure that all safety and other regulations were met without compromising the design.

H and R Johnson tilers worked alongside the specialist shopfitters Railston on this complex project - which was officially opened in January 2006.

Railston provide turn-key interior fit-out services and supply specialist merchandising equipment to major retail and leisure companies throughout Europe.

The company, in conjunction with HandR Johnson and 'I'am' Associates who designed the facilities, attended the ninth annual Retailer Interior Awards, held at London's Grosvenor House Hotel recently.

Criteria for the category stated that 'the judges would be looking for shopfitters that demonstrate excellence in fabrication and translation of design ideas' Steve Whitehurst, Contracts Marketing Executive, of HandR Johnson said: "We are very pleased with the way Material Lab looks, and it is no surprise that Railston, in conjunction with 'I'am' Associates, have won this accolade".

Managing Director of Railston, Steve Rumsey said: "This is arguably the highest accolade an UK shopfitter can receive".

"The project was a challenge that demanded the very best from our team here at Railston.".
