The Health and Safety Executive has issued a safety alert to those involved with lift installation and refurbishment.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a safety alert to those involved with lift installation and refurbishment The alert follows a fatal injury to a lift engineer during the refurbishment of an existing electric traction lift in central London

The incident occurred while the lift car was being supported on temporary suspension arrangements.

Those arrangements failed and resulted in the death of the engineer working on the lift.

HSE's warning is aimed at all lift owners, those who control premises where lifts are installed and refurbished, and those managing or undertaking this and similar work.

The alert reminds them of the importance of providing and maintaining suitable arrangements for the temporary support of lift cars.

HSE recommends that those arrangements be reviewed immediately to take into account:.

* The adequacy of risk assessments and method statements to ensure that the lift car is always adequately supported, and where it is suspended, there is a secondary means of support.

* The training and competence of those involved in such work.

* Compliance with the requirements of "Approved Code of Practice and Guidance - Safe use of lifting equipment - Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998" (LOLER) L113, ISBN 0 7176 1628 2 available from HSE Books priced £8.00.

* Reference to BS 7255:2001 "Code of practice for safe working on lifts".

HSE inspectors are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of this fatal incident.

Any further lessons to be learned will be made public as necessary.
