Jacksons defending the Castle
Jacksons Fencing awarded contract by Newport County Council to make a castle secure.
Jacksons Fencing, the south east's leading fencing and security fencing solutions company was awarded a contract by Newport County Council to make a castle secure.
Newport City Council faced a growing problem of social disorder, violent crime and drug use at Newport Castle, an area of important historical heritage.
The castle, believed to be one of the first built in Wales at around 1327, had due to the intricate maze of paths and numerous hiding places become home to drug users and muggers.
Welsh heritage agency, CADW, was also concerned that people were causing irreparable damage to the site by climbing over sections of the unprotected fortress.
The installation of CCTV and increased policing failed to solve the problem, so the council turned to leading fencing and security solutions specialist, Jacksons Fencing to provide a permanent solution.
Jacksons Fencing designed a series of fences and gates using their Barbican range of fencing with finials to defend the fortress.
Jacksons installed 72metres of 2metre high Barbican fencing with Saxon finials around the castle, with a 3 metre wide gate, fan panel and quadrant panel galvanised and polyester powder coated in a green finish to blend in with the environment.
The measures introduced by Jacksons were so successful that serious and violent crime in the castle has been totally eliminated.
Richard Jackson, Managing Director of Jacksons Fencing spoke about the success of the project.
"Newport City Council was looking for a permanent solution to anti-social behaviour in the grounds of a monument of National historical importance".
"Jacksons were chosen because we design, manufacture, deliver and install a range of security measures that not only blend in with the environment, but provide solutions".
"Our success in Newport has been total, and our fencing has eliminated crime in the castle, making it a safe place for people to enjoy without the fear of being confronted by crime.".
