Bamtec, one of the world's leading concrete slab reinforcement solutions, was the product of choice at the new Manchester Joint Hospital site.

Demand for high quality and time-efficient construction in the NHS has made Bamtec, one of the world's leading concrete slab reinforcement solutions, the product of choice at the new Manchester Joint Hospital site More than three thousand tonnes of Bamtec will be used by contractor Heyrod Construction in the first phase of a £240m hospital redevelopment, which will see Manchester Children's Hospital and two nearby facilities replaced with a seven-storey city hospital

Heyrod Construction has opted to use Bamtec thanks to its simple 'roll-out' installation and associated time-saving benefits.

Bamtec concrete reinforcement is manufactured to individual design specifications and to suit different size and load-bearing requirements.

Comments Steve Harrison, project manager for Heyrod Construction : "Bamtec gives us the maximum advantage in terms of easy installation and faster fixing speeds".

"Previously it might have taken us four to five days to prepare for a pour, but now we simply roll-out Bamtec according to the layout drawing and can be ready in as little as two days instead".

"" Jim Ness, contracts director for Heyrod Construction comments: "There is a shortage of labour within the UK construction industry and specifically a shortage of steel fixers".

"Bamtec's simple installation requires much less labour, which means we can utilise our steel fixing team across a greater number of sites".

"Completing jobs on time is vital for us and our clients and so enhancing programme security is very important.

We know that in the winter months bad weather can interfere with our scheduling but products like Bamtec have helped us to factor 'certainty' into the job".

Bamtec has also helped to further improve Heyrod's health and safety record by minimising the repetitive strain and back injuries caused by the lifting and bending involved with traditional steel fixing".

"Indications from the HSE are that the use of Bamtec on site can reduce the incidence of RSI by as much as 80% ".

"Richard Webster, general manager for Hy-ten in Bootle, the UK licensee for Bamtec, comments: "The construction industry is under ongoing pressure to deliver NHS schemes in shorter and shorter amounts of time so there is a marked need for time and cost efficient solutions such as Bamtec.

Through the use of finite element analysis software, Bamtec can also deliver considerable savings in the amount reinforcement used in the flat slab design .

Bamtec gives steel fixers, concrete contractors and the rest of the construction supply chain a real competitive edge in what is a very competitive market".

"The Manchester Joint Hospitals project is a real flagship venture for us and we are delighted to be involved with such large scale improvements to public services".

Bovis Lend Lease is the lead contractor and Bamtec will be delivered on site at intervals over the next 18 months.

Construction is expected to be complete by 2010.
