Home For The Future Wins Award With Ibstock Brick

Using Ibstock's Westbrick Staffordshire Slate Blue Smooth, the striking exterior helped to win the BDA 2002 Best Private Housing Development award -one of eight awards featuring Ibstock's brick.

The design of Terrace One in Lanark Street, Glasgow, was the result of a challenge by The Burrell Company Developments to McKeown Alexander Architects to produce an innovative housing environment for a modern lifestyle at an affordable price.

Using Ibstock's Westbrick Staffordshire Slate Blue Smooth, the striking exterior helped to win the BDA 2002 Best Private Housing Development award (just one of the eight awards featuring Ibstock's bricks).

Terrace One is located in the City of Glasgow Homes For The Future development, which was started in 1999, and to which McKeown Alexander have already contributed buildings.

The exterior features the Westbrick Staffordshire Slate Blue Smooth bricks in a stack bond with recessed pointing, which emphasises the role of the brick as masonry and part of the rectilinear housing facades, in harmony with the aluminium framed window groupings and other design elements.

Practice architect Stan Doyle commented: "Ibstock's technical support is always appreciated by us, and the quality and appearance of their bricks are excellent." Terrace One comprises eight 2 and 3 bedroom houses, built across a sloping site and facing a slightly secluded landscaped public area.

The slope allows the 3 bedroom houses to feature a footbridge to the front entrance at first floor level, over an embankment that admits light to the ground floor level.

The Terrace One houses are constructed on a block-built cavity wall, to which the exterior bricks are fastened.

The houses are insulated to very high standards, as is the membrane covered flat roof construction, and are glazed with a proprietary aluminium frame double glazed unit.
