Ibstock Wins Building 2004 Sustainability Award

An Ibstock Brick product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team May 18, 2004

At the prestigious Building Awards 2004 Ceremony amongst its industry peers, Ibstock Brick won the Sustainability Award for the depth and comprehensiveness of its environmental programme.

Covering all aspects of the Company's business, Ibstock is the first building materials supplier to win.

The award was collected by Dr David Hills, Ibstock's Environmental Manager.

The evening marked a double success with Ibstock's sister company Forticrete winning the Best Practice Award.

The judges made specific reference to Ibstock's dedication to the local environments where it works.

What really blew the panel away is the company's commitment to site restoration - instead of abandoning clay quarries when it is finished, Ibstock transforms the pits into nature reserves.

In West Lothian, a 200 ha ex-quarry was replanted with 100,000 of trees.

Lakes and wetlands were created and rare plants were also re-introduced.

In addition, Ibstock has ISO 14001 accreditation for all 24 of its manufacturing sites - more than all the rest of the UK brick industry in total - a very active waste and recycling programme and a continuing search for alternative energy sources for production and transport.
