Several interesting design and construction features distinguish the new theatre built for Queen Margaret's School, Yorkshire, using a specially produced edition of Ibstock's Birtley Old English Buff brick Intended for a wide variety of performances, and seating up to 250, the theatre was designed by Adam Wardle, of Associated Architects, to meet significant aesthetic and performance criteria

Adam Wardle comments: "The Trustees of Queen Margaret School wanted a building that distinguished itself within its surroundings, while achieving maximum flexibility for teaching performing arts and productions.

With half a day turn around time the theatre can be converted from proscenium production, to theatre in the round, to thrust stage and orchestral accompaniment.

The multi-use space is designed to be quite womb-like and inward looking." "The Birtley Old English Buff brick was specially manufactured to 80mm high by Ibstock.

In addition, the brickwork was mortared with only a 7mm joint and uses header bond, so the appearance is quite distinctive.

The brick, bond and jointing were chosen to blend closely with the existing listed buildings.

Lime rich mortar was used in the mortar to eliminate the need for movement joints in the walls.

"Ibstock was selected because the brick was the correct colour and it had the expertise to manufacture to the tolerances we required.

Ibstock bricks were also used to manufacture pre-assembled arch lintels to our design, cut bricks were pre-fabricated on to cast concrete lintels and craned into place at the appropriate moment." "The building outline is approximately egg-shaped, with an unusual diaphragm wall construction, comprising inner and outer loadbearing brick walls.

The walls are separated by a gap of 0.5 metres, but have cross-links, and are surmounted by a concrete header beam across the top to unify the structure." "This provides an excellent acoustic mass, without use of a steel frame, so represents good structural honesty - what you see is what is supporting the building; it is also a very cost-effective construction method." Recognising the complexity of the project and brickwork specification, the unique Ibstock Zenith Managed Contract approach was provided from an early stage.

A senior member of staff was attached to the project to clearly understand everyone's needs and expectations.

This pro-active approach from Ibstock enabled clear communication and prompt action to produce the required result.

Architects for the Queen Margaret School Theatre were Associated Architects of Birmingham.

Building contractors were Denne Construction of Kent.
