Context-sympathetic bricks from Ibstock
Architects btpw partnership competition-winning design uses context-sympathetic materials including three different bricks from Ibstock.
Sharing a location with ex-Admiralty offices and former rum warehouses, the Pepys Estate on the River Thames in Deptford has maintained its associations with this historic naval area To complement the listed buildings, the architects, btpw partnership, have delivered a competition-winning design of mixed tenure housing, built using modern methods of construction, with context-sympathetic materials including three different bricks from Ibstock

The variety of visual textures derive from the brick, wood and textured metal, combined with glass block screens, which echo the warehouse and utilitarian aesthetic of the site.
The architecture harmonises carefully with the landscaped surrounds, including new and existing London plane trees, and one of the chief aims of the masterplan - also developed by bptw partnership - was to interconnect public and open spaces with safe and accessible pedestrian thoroughfares.
The Ibstock bricks featured were Dorking Red and Arundel Yellow Multi Stock for the main facades, panels with the more rustic appearance of West Hoathly Medium Multi Stock and contrasts from the crisp, suave lines of Staffordshire Slate Smooth Blue.

A close working partnership between members of the design team facilitated the use of a timber frame construction in the first and third stages of the development.
This modern method of construction was employed to due its energy efficiency, and has saved on-site construction time.
Timber frame construction has been taken to new heights on the third phase of the development, which will rise to seven storeys - leading the way for this method of construction in the UK.
Choice of durable materials and commitment to high quality standards in construction and finishing have achieved an exceptionally high quality housing scheme, which has been delivered on time and to budget.
Phases one and two of the Pepys redevelopment currently provide 169 mixed tenure homes within the Housing Corporation's funding levels.
When complete, there will be a total of 277 affordable houses and apartments.
The regeneration and design for Pepys has been recognised with a prestigious Silver Standard from Building for Life.
The Standard, established in partnership with CABE, recognises exemplary sustainable design.
