81% of housebuilders also said that sustainability of materials was important or very important in their work.
"Overall, the survey confirms that Ibstock's long commitment to sustainability in brick manufacture matches housebuilders' views on the main sustainability issues," comments Ibstock Marketing Manager, Andrew Halstead Smith.
Five major sectors including housebuilders, contractors, supply chain and architects were surveyed.
Questions included how they viewed sustainability in the industry and the effects on their business.
The sustainability of materials was a key issue, covering 9 factors, including long life, re-usability, low maintenance requirements and aesthetics, from 7 different cladding materials.
Brick came top or second in most of the categories - more than any other material.
Waste recycling and disposal were singled out by some housebuilders as a specific site issue, with waste disposal and purchasing a waste value measure for each site adding to on-site costs.
Main contractors also mention the site waste problems, with waste from broken products a specific worry.
While architects and main contractors saw a supplier's sustainability credentials and environmental policies as being important, housebuilders also valued loyalty and a long relationship.
More than 60% of housebuilders has a sustainability policy (industry average 67%).
67% of housebuilders mentioned they found sustainability practices were having a major impact on their business decisions - 10 % more than the industry average and greater than any other group except architects (69%).
*The Ibstock Sustainability Survey April - May 2007, included qualitative and quantitative research amongst more than 250 building industry professionals, with main groups being architects, builders' merchants, main contractors, housebuilders and general jobbing builders.
