Best practice for safe sprinkler
installation
Vital need for correct installation of flexible connections, to guarantee both safe function and full insurance cover.
Members of the British Automatic Sprinkler Association (BASA) heard at their recent meeting [30 March] about the vital need for correct installation of flexible connections, to guarantee both safe function and full insurance cover Alan Stimpson of IFI Fire, exclusive supplier of the leading flexible connection Rapidrop, addressed 40 delegates on the pitfalls of misuse of such connections - for example, by overbending or introducing kinks that could cause water flow loss and potential failure of the system

Church Wardens Could Fall Foul Of Poor Maintenance
Church wardens should be taking more care of their footpaths, steps and courtyards if they are to avoid enormous insurance premiums following compensation claims.
'Flexible connections have clear and proven advantages in terms of installation speed, cleanliness and elimination of some second fix procedures,' he said.
'However, they must be put in by people trained by Rapidrop to its high standards.
'For example, not only must careful regard be paid to water pressure losses, such that the system is not reduced below a safe standard; it is also important to make sure that the routing of connections allows for proper drainage, and to avoid the possibility of blockage from accumulated sediment.' Mr Stimpson also covered issues about correct sizing of fittings at connection points and the orientation of outlets on the range pipes - all crucial aspects of installing a system that will operate efficiently when it is most needed: to save lives.
In order to show that Rapidrop flexibles are not bent tighter than the minimum bend radius, and can be easily checked visually from the floor, Rapidrop has introduced its ingenious new Minimum Radius Indicator.
This bright orange proprietary device is easily fixed on each bend of a Rapidrop flexible connection after installation to show that the bend is correct.
Later in the day, this theme was picked up by Steve Mizon of Royal Sun Alliance and the InFIReS project, who echoed these warnings about maintaining high standards of installation.
