Christina Jackson is set to become the first woman to chair the Midlands region of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Christina, who is 47 and an Associate Director of Ove Arup and Partners, takes over the prestigious position from Mike Mann on 7 October when ICE holds its AGM at Austin Court, Birmingham There are more than 5,000 ICE members in the Midlands, but Christina is looking forward to spreading the civil engineering message to an even wider audience

"Our members are at the forefront of contributing to the region's development and helping to shape its future.

During my year in office I will be initiating debate with other organisations on key issues facing the region and how we can work together for the benefit of all." She has already planned a series of panel discussions: * 8 December, 2004: 'Strategic Rail Links - in 2020 will Birmingham be a national hub or a backwater?' (to be hosted with the Railway Civil Engineering Society).

* 16 February, 2004: 'Removing Obstacles to Regeneration' (to be hosted with The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors).

* 13 April, 2004: 'Congestion - Can we beat it?' (to be hosted with the Institution of Highways and Transportation).

In addition: * A regional conference, 'Waste Management in the West Midlands: Responding to the Challenge', has been organised together with the WM Regional Assembly Technical Advisory Body on Waste and will be held on 10 November at Austin Court, Birmingham.

Christina graduated from Leeds University with a degree in civil engineering and also has an MSc in geotechnics from Cornell University.

She has worked for Arup since graduating, including being project engineer then project director for the investigation and treatment of abandoned limestone workings in the Black Country.

She has been particularly involved with land reclamation and regeneration and also major highway schemes, such as the M40 and the M6 Toll.

She is married with two daughters, Danielle, 14 and SarahJane, four.

Project work doesn't stop when she returns home from work - together with husband Michael, a housing developer, they are restoring a 20-roomed, Grade II listed, hunting lodge in Worcestershire that was once the home of the Marquess of Queensberry who famously sued Oscar Wilde over his relationship with his son Lord Alfred Douglas.

Christina works three days a week for Arup at the Arup Campus, Solihull and is heartened by their enlightened attitude.

She said.

"With modern technology such as video-conferencing there's no bar to part-timers making a major contribution.

The challenge for management in UK companies is to find appropriate roles so that talented and trained people aren't lost from the workplace.".
