For some years, Birmingham City Council has been managing a highways infrastructure whose repairs and maintenance bill has gone beyond being addressed by the Council utilising its existing financial resources.
Now, in conjunction with the private sector, it is seeking a possible £2billion public private partnership using a PFI (Private Finance Initiative) solution.
Consortia are currently bidding for the contract to provide major investment into the city's highways infrastructure, including the road network, street lighting and highway structures, bringing it back to an acceptable standard and maintaining it over the next 25 years.
The preferred bidder is due to be selected in autumn 2006 with a 'Street Scene' service commencing in mid 2007.
Speakers from the Department for Transport (DfT) and Birmingham City Council will discuss how PFI fits into the government future strategy for addressing backlog maintenance in highways infrastructure and, more specifically, the management of Birmingham's highways network and the possible future under PFI.
