Public

The Institute of Acoustics is inviting nominations for its 2006 Award for Promoting Acoustics to the Public.

Acoustics is a fascinating subject area which affects everyone's lives, so the Institute of Acoustics wishes to recognize those who communicate its concepts and importance to the public at large The Institute of Acoustics, the UK's professional body for those working in acoustics, noise and vibration, is inviting nominations for its 2006 Award for Promoting Acoustics to the Public

This is the second year of this Award, which was created with the object of recognizing either an outstanding piece of work during the previous year or in respect of sustained long-term activity.

The inaugural Award in 2005 was presented to Bronwen Bird of Techniquest for her innovative work on communicating acoustical phenomena to the public by developing unique science exhibits and educational programmes.

The term 'public' in the Award is intended to be interpreted widely, as persons without acoustical expertise, and the winner's work must be shown to have benefited the public in the British Isles.

Examples of work might include:.

* Writing articles for the non-acoustical press.

* Authoring web pages.

* Demonstrations and lectures.

* Work with schools to promote acoustics.

* Media work on TV or radio.

* Exhibitions.

Dr Tony Jones, President of the Institute of Acoustics, says, "Acoustics has a fundamental impact on many aspects of our lives and greater awareness can benefit all us".

"Promoting acoustics can also help encourage more people to study and follow careers in acoustics".

"We wish to recognize people who have actively brought about a greater understanding of acoustics to the general public".

The closing date for nominations is 15 June 2006.

The award will only be made to a worthy recipient.

Nominations may be made by third parties or by the individual concerned and should be addressed to the President of the Institute of Acoustics at 77A St.Peter's Street, St.Albans, Hertfordshire, AL1 3BN.

The individual nominated need not be a member of the Institute.

Nominations forms are available from the Institute of Acoustics website.
