CIPHE gives affordable homes presentation
Blane Judd, chief executive of the CIPHE, has delivered a presentation on plumbing for affordable homes at the Build Tech Conference in India.
Shortage of housing is an acute problem in India and the government is encouraging the development of low cost housing away from the already densely populated urban areas.
Organised by the Builders' Association of India, the conference focussed on the new technology and methodology required to deliver mass construction of affordable homes without compromising on health or safety issues.
Mr Judd of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) spoke about the water challenges India will face in the next 25 years and likened the country's current intermittent water situation to that of the UK in the 19th century where towns had restricted access to water.
The presentation looked at ways to make intermittent water supplies as safe as possible and provided information on innovative products that could prevent the build up of dangerous bacterium in pipe work through to devices that would reduce the risks of flooding if taps were left on after supplies had been interrupted.
Mr Judd commented: "One of the major roles of the CIPHE is to protect public health and safety and as a member of the World Plumbing Council there are no geographic boundaries to education".
"The health hazards caused by intermittent water supplies are huge".
"Stagnant water can lie in pipes and without adequate control valves pollutants can flow both ways, spreading bacteria throughout the system".
"Low-cost technology exists to reduce the risk of contamination through competent installation of controls and I hope my presentation helped to raise the awareness of Indian plumbers".
