Total Electrical Training helps Corgi registered gas installers comply with Part P of the Building Regulations.

Total Electrical Training exhibited at Installer Live in the Ricoh Arena in Coventry and felt the show was a big success.

The exhibition was one of several this year being used by the firm to educate and campaign for higher levels of Part P compliance.

"We regard the gas, heating and plumbing market as enormously important," explained Chris Atkin, managing director of Total Electrical Training.

"The recent changes in the building regulations have meant that gas installers are now seeking our training services".

"However, there is some confusion amongst them over whether they have to comply with Part P.

The best way for a gas installer to decide whether they need to register with a Part P scheme provider is to simply ask the question 'am I carrying out electrical installation work that involves adding to, or installing, a new circuit?'.

If the answer is yes then the installer will need to Part P compliant," he explained.

All Part P scheme providers recognise that installers who are not also electricians will require new skills and re-training.

They may also require the installer to acquire a qualification, for example, City and Guilds 2381, which is an acknowledged 'must have'.

"Complying with Part P isn't difficult," continued Chris.

"However, it might be that an installer requires further training in testing and inspecting electrical circuits".

"Furthermore, Part P is all about the electrical safety of the installation, so if you don't feel confident about filling out electrical test certificates or using test equipment, then you might want to address and consider attending a domestic electrical testing and inspection course".

Total Electrical Training was on hand at the show to discuss the range of training courses provided by the company.

These include City and Guilds testing and inspecting modules as well as domestic installation refreshers and Part P courses including City and Guilds 2381 - the 16th edition IEE regulations.
