Mortar, formulated specifically to assist rigid construction of streetscape works and provide the necessary strength and durability in 'The Hundred' and Latimer Street in the centre of Romsey.

By re-allocating carriageway space in favour of wider footways and providing defined crossing points for pedestrians, Hampshire County Council, in conjunction with Test Valley Borough Council, has created a more pleasant and safe environment for both the local residents and visitors to the Hampshire market town of Romsey The recently completed 26-week, £750K enhancement scheme, in 'The Hundred' and Latimer Street in the centre of the town, has successfully balanced the needs of all users, i.e pedestrians, the disabled and cyclists, as well as through traffic and access for delivery vehicles

The widened footways have been surfaced with a mixture of attractive Yorkstone flags and man-made paving slabs, all selected to harmonise with the general environment of this historic location.

In order to complement the paving further, joints were grouted with 'Cempoint' cementitious pointing mortar in a special sandstone colour.

Rocon Contractors , who carried out the enhancement project, simply mixed Cempoint with clean water on site, transferred the mortar to a pointing gun and neatly applied it between the paving's joints.

Fast setting and shrinkage compensated Cempoint, manufactured by Tamworth based Instarmac Group plc, is easy to apply and able to withstand repeated freeze/thaw cycles.

The mortar, formulated specifically to assist rigid construction of streetscape works and provide the necessary strength and durability, is fully compliant with BS7533.

It sets initially in 3 hours and develops a compressive strength of 30 N/mm2 within 28 days.

As well as flags, slabs and setts, Cempoint is also suitable for pointing brickwork, block work and stone walling.

Pedestrian access to all retail, business and residential properties was maintained throughout the Romsey project.

Councillor Keith Estlin, the County Council's Executive Member for Environment commented, "There is little doubt that this major scheme has provided a safer and more pleasant environment for pedestrians".

" Inevitably there was some disruption whilst the work was carried out, but car parks and businesses maintained operations as normal".

Test Valley Borough Council's Environment Portfolio holder, Councillor Tony Jackson said "The enhancements will encourage people to take advantage of the local car parking and visit more shops while they are in the town".

" I am sure that the enhancement scheme will prove very good for Romsey as a whole".
