Instarmac buckets playing an environmental role

An Instarmac Group product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jun 27, 2005

Instarmac buckets are proving instrumental in helping to avoid oil spills in a number of sensitive environmental locations.

"Instarmac buckets are proving instrumental in helping to avoid oil spills in a number of sensitive environmental locations, simply because they are ideal for catching the fuel and containing the waste after clean up".

This extraordinary comment was received from Ian Hassell, National Environmental Manager for Environmental Special Operations Services (ESOPS), who provide environmental management systems support to the construction and civil engineering markets, after he had stumbled upon the redundant containers in a waste skip.

It was prompted as a result of a rather unusual secondary reutilisation of the as so-called 'waste' containers as 'spill kits', which form part of his contractor-training programme.

The bucket's conventional function, of course, is to contain and convey the specialist maintenance and concrete repair materials manufactured by Tamworth based Instarmac Group plc - in this instance, for railway contract work.

"Some of the contractors trained by us now make use of the recycled buckets as standard spill kit items and also as tool boxes - even those not involved in the construction business", continued Ian Hassell.

"To date the containers have been introduced to more than 3,000 contractors as part of our environmental training sessions".

"I've recently been teaching oil spill control techniques to some Cuban and Romanian groups and could not have done it without the Instarmac buckets".

"They are ideal for this secondary use and I intend to introduce them on a wider scale".

"The rectangular shapes save space, are best for storage and for holding 20 litre petrol cans".

"They also happen to be the optimum size for transportation".

Christine Nicholls, Quality Manager for Instarmac Group states "Instarmac emphatically believe in the continued improvement of all areas of the business".

"The careful monitoring and control of raw materials, packaging and waste within the company's production and distribution facilities ensures protection of nature's limited resources".

"We are socially, economically and ecologically aware of the impact our operational practices have on the environment and are working towards Environmental Management System Accreditation ISO 14001".

"Ian's use of our buckets as part of his Contractor Training Scheme is just one example of how we are working with our partners to ethically manage our operational activities.".
