The sculpture, the Square's centrepiece, was originally conceived to reflect Bergen's maritime tradition and took five years to design.
Failing bedding and pointing mortar, binding the square's attractive cobbled surfacing, was causing the cobbles to become loose and in turn, was creating trip hazards for pedestrians.
Because of the Square's intricate nature and its exceptional sculptures, however, the planning and design stage of the restoration and modernisation work took a number of years to finalise.
As soon as the contract got underway, Tamworth based highway maintenance products manufacturer - the Instarmac Group plc, supplied two of its specialist rapid setting cementitious bedding and pointing mortars to assist with the square's revitalisation.
Initially blue coloured 16cm deep granite setts were installed to simulate a fountain stream, using Instarmac's Cembuild HS.
This shrinkage compensated fine bedding concrete, has superior bond strength, resistance to frost attack and long term durability properties.
As soon as the mortar had reached its initial set time of 3 hours, Ultracrete Flowpoint was used to grout between the newly installed setts.
Simultaneously, the surrounding loose cobbles were being removed, cleaned and re-bedded using Cembuild HS.
Once in place, the joints were also grouted with Ultracrete Flowpoint.
The grout's rapid setting properties and exceptional bond strength allowed the area to be opened to traffic within just 30 minutes of its application.
Because of the fast setting properties of both Cembuild HS and Ultracrete Flowpoint the objective of enhancing Bergen's Maritime tradition was achieved on time and with little inconvenience to pedestrians.
