Instarmac's Cembuild HS and Ultracrete Flowpoint provided the answers for Cheltenham town centre's ongoing streetscape refurbishment project.

In order to eliminate the possibility of lengthy closure, the Design Services Department of Cheltenham Borough Council gave specific attention to the planning of phase 4 of the town centre's ongoing streetscape refurbishment project Materials used to bed pavers on previous phases of Cheltenham's streetscape project had not stood up particularly well to the aggressive cleaning and constant heavy trafficking to which the surfaces are subjected

The Council's particular requirement was for fast setting bedding and pointing mortars to install and grout the large, heavy, but very attractive Natural York Stone flags and to minimise pedestrian disruption and possible loss of business to local retailers.

In addition, the Council required the newly specified materials to perform strongly and stand the test of time.

Since The Regency Spa town is a popular tourist location and home to the renowned annual horseracing festival, stylish shopping, colourful parks, floral displays and other special events, it was also important that the work ensured the area retained its exceptionally unique ambience, character and charm.

Instarmac's Cembuild HS and Ultracrete Flowpoint provided the answer.

Cembuild HS, a shrinkage compensated fine bedding concrete, was used to bed the flags.

The mortar is formulated to meet the demands of BS7533 for rigid construction of streetscape works and was specifically developed for the bedding of setts, cubes and kerbs, as well as slabs.

It combines superior bond strength, resistance to frost attack and long term durability properties.

As soon as the flags were in place, they were pointed with Instarmac's Ultracrete Flowpoint, a rapid setting grout specially formulated for situations calling for a fluid consistency and early trafficking.

Shrinkage compensated Ultracrete Flowpoint has incomparable qualities that include exceptional bond strength and rapid setting, thus allowing the area to be opened to traffic within 30 minutes.

It is also very economical in use.

The works form part of the councils Civic Pride plans and tie in with redevelopment of the former brewery Site.

Most of the GBP478,000 project was funded by the county council.

Councilor John Morris said, "This is part of the ongoing program to make sure Cheltenham is pedestrian friendly, has easy access to public transport and stays in the top 10 of shopping centres in the South West".

"We believe we have achieved that goal in this project".

This project phase, completed on time with minimal commuter and business inconvenience, was carried out by Cheltenham based contractor, the Grimshaw Group.

Most importantly, the area will require little maintenance due to the exceptional qualities of the specified materials.
