Risk free solution

An Instarmac Group product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Feb 7, 2006

Project in Jersey ran risk of failure at the granite setts and carriageway joints until Ultracrete Flowpoint was specified.

Running an unacceptable risk of possible failure at the joints between a heavily trafficked road and an adjoining pedestrian surface, triggered York based consultant Gary Thompson, of Ellis Thompson Design, to approach the Instarmac Group plc with a special interest in the company's Ultracrete Flowpoint.

The project location was Broad Street, St.Helier, Jersey, which is also home to the town's square.

The area had traditionally been used as a through route for traffic, with few facilities for visitors and residents to relax and enjoy the local atmosphere.

The States of Jersey Authority decided to redevelop the site and create a new urban town square that would fully reflect the island's illustrious history.

Part of the scheme was to raise the road to the same level as the adjoining pedestrian area, thus creating a seamless surface.

But because of the likely overrun of traffic, the plan ran the risk of failure at the granite setts and carriageway joints; until Ultracrete Flowpoint was specified.

Once cured, the easy to apply, rapid setting grout, provides high compressive and tensile strengths.

As soon as the contractor (the States of Jersey Public Services Department) had positioned the new granite slabs, Flowpoint (supplied via distributor Normans ) was poured into the joints and allowed to find its own level.

Shortly after, a water spray was used to remove excess material, resulting in an exposed aggregate finish.

Due to its fluid consistency, rapid bonding and rapid setting properties, Flowpoint enabled the contractor to complete the project on time and the square was re-opened after just 36 hours.

Jersey's beautiful landscape, its traditions and the character of its people have been forged by centuries of conflict, exploration, struggle and reinvention, all of which have left a rich legacy of history, culture and heritage.

To ensure the island maintains this inimitable environment, the States of Jersey is continually seeking new ways of improving the favourite spots of both tourists and the local population.

The primary objective of the Broad Street project; to create a new urban town square, has certainly been achieved.
