ISG supports recreation of lost London icon
ISG join forces with Pringle Brandon Architects, Surface to Air Architects, Atkins and Gleeds to project life-sized image of the legendary Skylon Tower onto the side of South Bank's Shell Building.
As part of the London Festival of Architecture 2008 Thursday's launch event is part of a wider campaign being led by Jack Pringle to potentially rebuild this spectacular icon in one of twelve possible locations across the UK.
The Skylon was a 300 foot tall piece of civic art designed by Powell and Moya Architects that formed the focal point of the 1951 Festival of Britain.
Despite being universally praised, the Skylon was taken down in an act described as 'architectural vandalism' just one year after it was built.
To encourage local communities to engage with the rebuild project, www.voteforskylon.com has been launched inviting the public to vote for one of the 12 possible locations across the UK where the Skylon could reside.
Pringle Brandon Senior Partner Jack Pringle already has the original Skylon drawings and is ready to start work.
Finance has been promised and there are more offers of support every week.
Speaking of the project, he says; "The Skylon Tower was one of the most awe-inspiring structures ever seen - and very much a symbol of its time".
"With Britain emerging from WWII there was an air that anything was now possible - especially amongst the young".
"The Skylon really was the physical embodiment of that idea - standing on the banks of the Thames people just stood and marvelled at it.".
