ISG Fire Safety Centre project in Leeds
Work is underway on ISG's GBP3 million project for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to create 'Safety Central' in Bramley, Leeds.
The new facility is the first of its kind in the UK and will become the Service's centre of excellence for safety awareness and education within the region.
Occupying the site of the former Bramley Fire Station, which was last operational in 2003, Safety Central will become an essential educational resource and training facility, whilst also housing the county's Community Fire Safety Team.
ISG is currently, modifying and reconfiguring the existing fire station building, which will be extended, with the addition of a two-storey steel frame structure at the rear, and then fully refurbished.
The former fire engine bay areas within the building will be turned into a demonstration and risk assessment area, with the contractor also installing a 50-seat lecture theatre.
Care will be taken to preserve one of the most evocative features of any fire station - the fire-fighters pole, which at the Bramley Fire Station was recognised as having one of the longest drops in the country.
ISG is working to complete the construction of the single-storey steel frame garage and workshop towards the rear of the site, which will house the service's display vehicles and provide an additional display area.
An impressive curvilinear metal roof will be craned into position on the fire station building towards the end of the year, and by August a large rainwater storage tank will be installed ready to harvest rainfall for use flushing toilets within Safety Central.
The project is scheduled for completion by May 2009.
Craig Tatton, managing director of ISG's regional business, commented: "Safety Central represents an entirely new concept in community fire safety awareness and we are delighted to be involved in this pioneering public sector project".
"Currently fire services across the UK are undertaking a strategic review of their estates to ensure that front line resources are located where demand is strongest, reducing response times and increasing overall efficiencies".
"Community engagement is also high up the agenda and we expect to see an increase in initiatives like Safety Central across the UK, alongside a continuation of new fire stations hosting purpose built community facilities.".
