ISG Retail and Leisure contract duo for Cambridge

An ISG plc product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Aug 6, 2008

ISG Retail and Leisure has now completed work at Cambridge University's Department of Anatomy and its Melville laboratories.

Both projects were completed earlier this year and hold a total value of approximately GBP3.5 million.

The national fit-out specialist started work on the Department of Anatomy in October 2006.

The first phase of work involved the construction of a new plant room and the installation of two new generators and a fuel tank and underground electrical infrastructure.

The second phase of work began in June 2007 and included the refurbishment of the human dissection room with new ventilation and extraction.

The team also finished the second phase of the plant room, involving the removal of old equipment, which had been carefully staged so that the plant room could be used during term time, with major works being completed during the summer shut down period.

Phase three involved a complete refurbishment of the second floor of the building to include two clean rooms requiring home office approval, new plant support gantry, roof coverings and external copper cladding.

Work began on Melville laboratories in September 2007 and was completed in April 2008.

The minor works project involved the refurbishment of the first floor laboratory and included a full mechanical and electrical package covering 11 fume cupboards and the installation of a new extract system, new steel structural support screening and glazed screening to present the visual aspect of an open area.

Work covered small and large laboratories, a technician's office, a plant room and write up room.

ISG Retail and Leisure managing director, Darren Hill comments: "Both projects have provided a welcome addition to our education portfolio as they go some way to highlighting our flexibility as well as our expertise in this area".

"The Department of Anatomy is based in the centre of Cambridge and so we had to anticipate and deal with delivery problems and restricted working practices imposed by working in such a central location".

Andy Middleton, the maintenance manager for Melville adds: "The team from ISG Retail and Leisure has proven to be a safe and reassuring presence on site and we have been impressed by their professional manner and the ease at which they problem solve and drive activity forward.".
