ISG commence Castleford sports hall scheme

An ISG plc product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Sep 15, 2008

ISG start work on a GBP1.3 million project with Wakefield Council to build a new sports hall and fitness suite at Castleford High School.

A catastrophic fire completely destroyed the previous sports hall in 2007 and the new building is set to provide superb modern facilities at the highly rated Technology and Sports College.

The new 875 sq m sports hall will occupy the same site as its predecessor, with the single-storey steel frame structure featuring an attractive curved roof line and brick and metal cladding finishes to its faandccedil;ade.

In addition to a new multi-use sports hall with sprung wooden flooring, the building also houses an air conditioned fitness suite, toilets and high specification changing facilities.

Roof mounted 'windcatchers' provide natural ventilation within the main sports hall, with a radiant gas fired system providing heating.

ISG will also install an under floor heating system within the changing room and toilet areas as well as work on the link corridor to connect the sports hall to the main school buildings.

The project is scheduled for completion by April 2009.

Craig Tatton, managing director of ISG's regional business, commented: "Childhood obesity is now a major issue within the UK, with some 2.1 million children currently categorised as either overweight or obese".

"Many forward thinking councils are looking towards better education and the provision of modern facilities to address this worrying trend".

"Wakefield Council is making a key investment in new leisure facilities for students at Castleford High School as part of its ongoing commitment to improving sporting amenities throughout the borough.".
