Totty Construction, the northern-based main contractor, has been awarded a £7.7m design and build contract for a 13 storey teaching and student accommodation block at Leeds College of Music.

The building, which occupies the site of a former car park at the college, is due to be handed over mid-August 2005.

The first four floors of the new block will provide much needed teaching and practice rooms, with floors five to 13 providing 190 single and twin rooms for the college's burgeoning student population.

Externally, the new building is set to prove highly distinctive, featuring a multi-coloured patchwork glass facade.

Mike Parkinson, managing director of Totty Construction, commented: "This latest project win continues the relationship between Totty Construction and Leeds College of Music, which has to date, generated over £10 million worth of work.

Totty continues to demonstrate its credentials within the education sector, with recent projects at the University of Manchester, University of Central Lancashire and Leeds Metropolitan University." David Hoult, principal of Leeds College of Music, explained: "The college continues to prove an extremely popular choice with students from across the UK and these new facilities will enable us to maintain the highest possible standards.

Following closely on from our last project with Totty, which entailed the construction of a new concert hall, The Venue, this latest phase in the development of the college highlights the desire to enhance our national reputation and build on our ongoing international presence.".
