ISG Totty has commenced work on a GBP6.3 million mixed-use development to kick-start 'Rotherham Renaissance', the redevelopment of the historic South-Yorkshire town centre.
The client developer is Liverpool-based Iliad, who were appointed last year by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council to oversee this first phase of a GBP30 million urban regeneration scheme encompassing residential, retail and office development within the town centre, together with public space by the River Don.
Work has now started on the construction of the first phase of the development, a five-storey building, designed by international architect Glenn Howells, on the site of a former car park in the town centre.
The building will comprise 44 high specification apartments, a large ground floor retail unit, a two-storey basement car park and an inner landscaped courtyard area.
The striking building features a number of different material finishes to its facade, with granite cladding to the first floor elevation, pre-cast concrete cladding panels to the second and third floors and aluminium glazing with rain screen cladding to the penthouse level.
Penthouse apartments will benefit from impressive balcony areas and externally, ISG Totty will form an attractive terraced area at both sides of the building and carry out a range of hard and soft landscaping finishes.
The development is scheduled for completion by May 2008.
John Gittins, managing director of ISG Totty, commented: "Rotherham Renaissance has been many years in the planning and we are delighted that ISG Totty will play such an integral role in the regeneration of the town centre".
"The construction of high quality, well designed buildings within the centre of Rotherham will provide a springboard to further enhance the town's built environment, with greater numbers of people living and working in the centre adding to the prosperity of this historic Yorkshire town".
Iliad, the developer, has already made its mark in Liverpool, where the company has been renovating run down areas for the past ten years and are the preferred developer for the Lime Street Gateway scheme in the heart of the city.
Iliad is a specialist in revitalising city centres, and is delighted to be working alongside the local Council and northern contractors, such as ISG Totty, to assist the regeneration of this important and historic Yorkshire town.
