Manchester sure start roll out programme

An ISG plc product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jul 24, 2007

ISG Totty Building has secured design and build projects valued at around GBP2 million with Manchester City Council, as part of its Sure Start development programme.

New purpose built Sure Start centres will be constructed across the city at Chorlton, Gorton, New Moston and Whalley Range as part of this major Council investment strategy, with ISG Totty Building due to commence work across these sites at the start of August.

Sure Start is a government initiative, which aims to increase the availability of childcare places, support parents and raise the quality of learning and development opportunities for young children.

The projects form part of ISG Totty Building's framework partnership deal with Manchester City Council, which sees the contractor work across the Council's property portfolio, delivering new build and refurbishment projects up to GBP500K in value.

At Chorlton Park and Broadhurst Park in New Moston, ISG Totty Building will demolish existing facilities to make way for the new Sure Start centres, which comprise a single-storey load baring masonry structure with aluminium windows and a flat performance membrane roof.

A further two identical centres will be built on part of the existing playing fields at St James' C of E Primary School in Gorton and St Margaret's C of E Primary School in Whalley Range.

Each Sure Start centre provides a range of facilities for parents and children, including a creche, child minder area, training room, health room, toy store and baby change areas.

External secure play areas will also be built at each of the new centres and ISG Totty Building will install fencing and landscape the surrounding areas with attractive hard and soft finishes.

Gary Hughes, construction director at ISG Totty Building, commented: "The government's Sure Start programme has contributed to significant local council investment within educational facilities".

"As a key framework partner, ISG has both the credentials and expertise to provide true end-to-end design and build solutions across the Council's property portfolio and these latest awards recognise the continuing success of this high profile procurement route".

"Work across the four sites is scheduled for completion early in the New Year and we are confident that these new Sure Start facilities will prove an invaluable asset to the local communities they serve.".
