ISG sustainable workshop redevelopment

An ISG plc product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Nov 21, 2008

ISG has secured its latest project with Kirklees Metropolitan Council - a GBP5.2 million design and build contract to build a new vehicle workshop in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

The new building replaces an existing facility on the site and the workshop, which maintains a large fleet of vehicles for the local authority including road sweepers and refuse wagons, will remain fully operational throughout the duration of the project.

By carefully phasing the 87-week programme, ISG will modernise and upgrade the entire site, whilst minimising potential disruption to council operations.

The first phase sees the contractor build new road sweeper wash off bays and associated drainage works, as well as forming a partition wall to divide the existing workshop building into two separate units.

Council staff will relocate to nearby temporary office accommodation at this stage of the project and ISG will then commence the strip out of mechanical and electrical services within the newly divided workshop area.

Towards the end of January 2009, work to demolish the first half of the building will begin and this phase will take approximately one month to complete.

ISG will then construct the new steel frame workshop building on this site, housing 11 vehicle bays behind steel roller shutter doors and two-storeys of high specification office accommodation.

Once completed, staff will relocate into the new building whilst the contractor carries out the demolition of the remaining half of the existing workshop and forms a large hard standing area for council vehicles.

The new facility has strong environmental credentials and features rainwater harvesting and re-use, roof mounted photo voltaic cells to generate electricity, a solar hot water system and the building is designed to accommodate a future 'district heating system' - which utilises waste heat from the nearby incinerator.

The project is scheduled for completion by late July 2010.

Craig Tatton, managing director of ISG's regional business, commented: "ISG was successful in securing the project by demonstrating its strong credentials in the delivery of complex and multi-phased projects, carried out across busy live environments".

"As a business, we have also forged strong working relationships with Kirklees Metropolitan Council over many years, proving a trusted and highly experienced construction partner".

Cllr David Hall, Cabinet member for Environment and Transport, said: "I am delighted to be able to move this project forward and to develop a new depot designed around 21st century principles".

"The facility will operate to the highest environmental and customer services standards.".
