Geospatial Engineering Surveyor Award Nominations
Nominations for the Geospatial Engineering Surveyor Award for 2004 are now being accepted by the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES).
The award was established in 1997 and is a sought-after recognition for RSME students.
The winner has his/her name displayed in gold leaf on a plaque in the Engineering Survey Department, along with a rogues gallery of past course attendants.
It is something that all students and visitors stop to look at.
It also makes news in the Royal Engineers' monthly magazine Sapper as well as their newsletter.
A three-hour technical presentation was the culmination of the seven month course.
The subject was - 'The History of Survey and its Relevance within the Corps'.
This required the students to carry out research on a given subject, formulate opinions and present it to an audience in preparation to being 'released into the real world' where they will have to give technical briefings.
The 10 students involved had spent the previous months carrying out various projects, starting with a refresher on basic principles and skills, an introduction to the new in-service survey equipment, before going on to specialised subjects such as hydrographic surveying, tunnelling, GPS and electronic road design.
Every student on the course impressed the instructors with their application to the subject, producing some excellent work.
Due to the close nature of the coursework, scores resulted in a tie for first place.
Two students Lance Corporal John Bowers and Lance Corporal John O'Donnell were announced as the top students in the technical presentation.
Harry Glennie, Chair of ICES Regional Affairs Committee and Mike Sutton, Chair of ICES Geospatial Engineering Practice Committee were invited as guests at the technical presentation and were very pleased to present the award to the winners.
