Geospatial Engineering Surveyor Award Nominations
Nominations for the Geospatial Engineering Surveyor Award for 2004 are now being accepted by the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES).
It is important therefore that our members are aware of the official line which ICES is taking in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean disaster.
Whilst the ICES does not have either an international or disaster relief remit, we feel that we have a remit to encourage collaborative effort in line with other professional bodies.
Where it is logistically possible, it is hoped that civil engineering surveyors will be able to offer their skills in the areas hit by the tsunami in making more than just a financial contribution.
No matter how much money is given it is never enough.
Once immediate relief requirements have been provided, a sustained effort will be needed in the provision of rehabilitation and reconstruction of the affected areas.
This will of course be very much a long term process.
The Institution has been in consultation with the Construction Industry Council and the Institution of Civil Engineers with whom we are associated members.
As a result, ICES wishes to encourage any of its members who are in a position to offer expertise to provide relief in the disaster-hit areas, to contact the Registered Engineers for Disaster Relief (RedR) to ascertain whether the help is needed and how it might best be delivered.
Red R is a charity that maintains a register of skilled engineers of various disciplines and would be pleased to receive offers of help from civil engineering surveyors.
(For RedR visit www.redr.org).The Institution's Council of Management will consider what financial contribution might be made at its meeting on 3rd March 2005.
