"Construction industry fails to measure value created by IT investment," suggests ITCBP survey 30% of construction professionals responding to an IT Construction Best Practice (ITCBP) survey confess that the impact of IT is never assessed in their organisations

Only 11% claim that they always measure the benefit of IT investment.

24% say that the benefits of IT are sometimes measured, while 35% admit that impacts are measured only very occasionally.

These are the findings of a recent poll of visitors to the website of ITCBP, the government-funded service that helps construction professionals harness the power of IT.

"Measurement is a critical, yet often neglected area of IT implementation," commented Dr John Connaughton, ITCBP project manager.

"Industry research supported by ITCBP consistently shows that companies that ensure IT goals and investment are aligned with corporate strategy develop real competitive advantage.

The knee-jerk reaction to IT simply doesn't work." ITCBP members can access and download a number of free resources to help simplify and support the process of measuring the value and benefits of IT investment (registration with ITCBP is free to all).

These include a self-assessment tool to help companies measure the effectiveness of their use of IT and identify areas for improvement.

Case studies also reveal how leading companies in the construction industry have developed and invested in IT strategies that are focused on supporting core business objectives and delivering measurable business.

Technology alone does not provide value - it is its application to the business that can add benefits, and these must be identified and assessed at every stage," said Dr John Connaughton, ITCBP project manager.

"The free resources available from ITCBP are an important source of information and advice for construction firms looking to ensure their investment in IT delivers business benefit.".
