A Bright Idea To Make Your Light Bulbs Last Longer

An Intelliswitch product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jun 16, 2003

The Intelliswitch, its makers claim, can extend bulb life by up to 20 times, vastly reducing financial outlay and the amount of time spent fitting new bulbs!

Fed up with having to change light bulbs that regularly seem to fail, always at the most inopportune moment? Now the time spent in darkness trying to locate and fit new bulbs could be drastically reduced with a new intelligent lightswitch, the Intelliswitch.

The Intelliswitch, its makers claim, can extend bulb life by up to 20 times, vastly reducing financial outlay and the amount of time spent fitting new bulbs! This last point is particularly valid for the elderly, the infirm or anyone with 'hard to reach' bulbs, such as recessed ceiling halogens, in chandeliers, etc Unlike traditional light switches, the Intelliswitch operates by soft touch control, with an attractive 'theatre' lighting effect turning the light on and off gradually over a second or so, rather than passing an immediate full power surge to the bulb filament which would normally cause it to burn out more quickly.

Bulb life is further extended when the useful built-in dimmer function is used and as less electricity is required when lighting is dimmed (maybe to create a 'mood'), further cost savings are obviously made.

Customers can create their own look for the switches to match or complement their decor, with a choice of colour co-ordinated snap-on covers (similar to mobile phone covers) or different metal overplates, which can be combined with colour co-ordinated inserts.

There are four styles and more than twenty colours to choose from, so a look can be found to suit any colour scheme and style of home.

The Intelliswitch features a soft red glow in the centre of the switch for easy location in the dark and has no moving parts (allowing it to be safely and hygienically cleaned and wiped down).

To further tailor switch functions to meet user needs, other options include the 'Energy Saver' switch (can turn off after a user chosen time), the 'Automatic' security switch (can turn room lights on and off automatically) and the 'Night Light' switch (dims down to a comforting glow automatically over a five hour period).

Ironically, the one type of bulb that Intelliswitch does not work with is the energy saving bulb, but Graham Whitworth, Chairman, explains that this is not an issue for the company and explains why, "We found from our research that not everyone likes the type of light given out by low energy bulbs.

They take a while to warm up to full light, can't be dimmed and, despite recent improvements to their looks, may not look right or work with feature or specialist lighting setups.

Our switches appeal to those who like the added features that Intelliswitch offer, plus those with inaccessible or specialist lighting".

The products directly replace existing switches, are easy to fit and require no additional wiring.

They provide the user with a whole range of interesting functions and lighting effects.

Slave switches (to enable two way-switching) and double switches are also available.
