A tower crane lifts pre-finished steel roof decking to a loading platform at Jackson Construction's GBP3.8 million project to build a new school in Ipswich The development is on track to complete in time for the start of the new school term in September 2006 and sees Jackson provide new premises for Ipswich Preparatory School

The four-storey steel frame structure features multi-level decked play areas, with canopy shading and external finishes including traditional brick, insulated render and cedar cladding.

Accommodation includes a multi-use hall, a range of classrooms, art rooms, a music and drama centre, a science laboratory and computer centre.

The state-of-the-art building cleverly blends the contemporary with elements taken from Ipswich's proud maritime history, featuring multi-level open deck areas to provide both recreational space and extending classroom capabilities, with canopies to give shade and weather protection.

The new school will be adjacent to the existing Nursery and Pre-Prep Department and will provide cohesive education for pupils aged three to eleven on a single purpose built site.

Ipswich School will develop the existing Preparatory School site into new facilities for sixth form students.

The project sees Jackson Construction erect the steel frame of the structure on a tightly constrained site - working within the footprint of the new building and a steep embankment.

The external deck areas will be created from non-slip masonry slabs and provide an integral part of the learning environment, with art and science classes making full use of this innovative component of the building's design.
